Nawel Skandrani, Tunisia.

Nawel Skandrani
Choreographer, teacher and dancer. After an international dance career, and creating the National Ballet in Tunisia she now focuses on choreography and teaching. She was critical towards the regime of Ben Ali, and his attempts to manipulate her by forcing her to join his CDR party failed. Ironically, Nawel has lived all her life right next to the presidential palace in Carthage.

She is now active in civil society, and besides other activities, she set up an annual dance & theatre workshop for children in rural Tunisia. This is a new and unique programme in Tunisia, and she hopes to teach the children skills such as self expression, self discipline and how to be part of a community. She successfully fought off attempts by local Salafists to close down the workshop last summer.
