The world celebrated the so-called Arab Spring, which started in Tunisia on December 18th 2010, and led to the end of authoritarian rule in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. Despite having new governments elected after toppling the old regimes, however, the revolution is far from. So far democracy has not at all been what people were hoping for in Egypt and Libya, and both countries are facing major difficulties and challenges in the attempt to build a peaceful and economically thriving country.
Even though the revolution is not yet over in Tunisia as well and many challenges lie ahead the country has done comparatively well.
My series of portraits shows a selection of the amazing women who work tirelessly on progressing Tunisia towards a successful democracy. They show strong women who are the opposite of the stereotype of the oppressed Arab woman, which is commonly shown in the media.
